Central Michigan University Volunteers for Louisville Festival of Film, 2009

Posted on June 23rd, 2010 by admin in center of volunteers | 2 Comments »

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich., Oct. 5, 2009 — After nearly four days of volunteering their time and event-planning skills to ensure Louisvilles first International Festival of Film was a success, 30 Central Michigan University students are back in Mount Pleasant after a job well done.

I cant thank these students enough, said Conrad Bachmann, executive director and creator of the festival, as he hugged students before they stepped on the bus back to Mount Pleasant. Without them, this event wouldnt have been as successful as it was. These kids came here ready to work, and their talents rose to the occasion.

The students from CMUs Department of Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services Administration coordinated a number of events over the weekend from a red carpet gala, film screenings, technical set up and tear downs to entertainment and hors doeuvre parties leading up to films such as The Burning Plain, which stars Louisville native Jennifer Lawrence, Kim Basinger and Charlize Theron.

They also worked one-on-one with directors and actors, learning both about the film business and what it takes to execute a high-profile event that attracted hundreds to Louisville home to the famous Kentucky Derby. Throughout the festival, students helped facilitate screenings at venues that included the Muhammad Ali Center, the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts and the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory.

I am just so proud of my students, said CMU instructor Lorie Tuma, who oversaw the students in Louisville. They really came together as a team and embraced this event and through it all they became professionals.

CMU senior Justyna Kopacz said networking with well-known stars and directors during the festival was enlightening.

This has been an amazing experience, said Kopacz of St. Clair Shores. We now have a real behind-the-scenes look at how events like this come together. We learned so many of the ins and outs and what needs to be done to get the job done.

Over the festival, students connected with celebrities that included Doris Roberts, best known for playing Marie Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond, and Jennifer Lawrence, who is currently filming The Beaver with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster in New York.

Students even shared a hospitality suite loaded with food and snacks with Kathryn Joosten, currently starring as Mrs. McClusky on the popular award-winning series Desperate Housewives.

She was just so welcoming to us, said CMU junior Kristine Deater of Brighton. Here she is this celebrity and she opened up to us so much. She was just inspiring, and I think we all learned a lot from her.

The CMU students are part of the events management minor, which is one of the largest minor programs on CMU’s campus with 250 students. The minor is offered through the Department of Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services Administration. To learn more, visit http://rpl.cmich.edu.

My mom’s friend owns a daycare center, and ive been volunteering there for months. She said she was open to giving me a paying job but she’s unsure of the legal age. Im 15 and i live in FL, anyone know when i could start working?
Thanks!

In the state of Florida, you have to be 16 to be counted in the child to teacher ratio and 18 to be left in charge of a group of children.

US Peace Corps Volunteers Thailand Group 114 10 wk Training

Posted on June 18th, 2010 by admin in volunteers | 25 Comments »

In this video I try to express the feeling of what it may be like to be in Peace Corps. This video was filmed during the training and home stay before actually becoming volunteers. You get an intensive training for 3-4 months. Learning customs, culture and language. You have a home stay experience for over 6 weeks. Somtimes these people become very good friends in the future. Then you get assigned and move to a new location after training. You do your job whatever field it is in. Many of us were English Teachers and local community Trainers. Also many are involved in community work. You also become good friends with many of the volunteer you meet in your group. We had a special bond with each of the volunteers we lived near. You may see them often as they may live near you or you may never see them again after training if you are far apart. You complete your service in two years and then return home to share your experience. Its hard but interesting and amazing, things you never would get to do see and eat! Skills you pickup and trades you learn.Helping others the whole time. Plus it’s awesome to learn new cultures and languages. Full immersion makes it easy too! I have been a Peace Corps volunteer twice. It is amazing! you make no money but have an amazing experience. Its something you can’t expect and its hard but fun and feels good to help other people. The work with community groups is some of the most rewarding. Tree planting, reforestation and recycling. Aids work communtiy libraries or therater groups many diffent options are available for secondary projects. After two years you have a final workshop “close of service” meeting to help ease you back into America. Help you with job placement or provide school opportunities as well.

Where can I volunteer for IT work online?

Posted on June 15th, 2010 by admin in online volunteering | 1 Comment »

It’s hard to get a job without experience, and it’s hard to get experience without a job. I thought I might get some experience working as a volunteer while I can afford to. Anything you’d recommend?

Try the web sites below. Often, you will still have to go onsite to organizations to introduce yourself, talk about your credentials and the scope of projects you want to do, and build trust at an organization so they will be comfortable with your working from home.

I’m interested in the biology of animals and I want to find a place to volunteer. Any ideas?

Posted on June 15th, 2010 by admin in volunteer center of | 1 Comment »

I live in Orange County and it would be ideal if there was some kind of nature center I could volunteer at to learn more about animals in there habitat. I would not mind working with kids in a camp either. If anyone has any ideas of where I could look into or how I can find a volunteering job somewhere please help!

Local zoo’s take volunteers. You might also look at raptor centers, animal shelters or nature museums to volunteer at.
