The Massachusetts Department of Correction offers many volunteer opportunities and the volunteers provide their services for a variety of different reasons and come from diverse backgrounds.

About volunteering:
Currently there are 1,476 certified, active permanent volunteers throughout the 18 correctional facilities. There are 768 male volunteers and 708 female volunteers representing 52% and 48% respectively. The largest racial/ethnic group is White (64.6%), followed by Hispanic (25%) and Black (9.1%).

There are 926 faith-based volunteers and 550 non faith-based volunteers. The largest group of faith-based volunteers providing religious services and programs identify themselves as Protestant, followed by Catholic, Christian Science, Buddhist, Quaker, Native American, Muslim, Jewish, and Wiccan.

The non faith-based volunteers are typically involved in the facilitation of life-skills and self-help programs, including Cognitive Skills, Alternatives to Violence, Emotional Awareness (Houses of Healing), Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Book Discussion, Toastmasters, Parenting, Creative Writing, GED Tutors, and the N.E.A.D.S. Puppy Program.

The majority of volunteers are being recruited through Internet websites such as the Massachusetts Service Alliance and the Massachusetts Teachers Retirement Board, as well as several volunteer online newsletters. Additionally, the Department has a volunteer electronic mail contact list with 1,080 subscribers.

Can i put online volunteering experience on a resume ? is it valid?

I have done some online volunteering through the UN volunteers website , translating from english to Spanish and such for certain organizations and i was wondering if it is ok to mention it on a resume ? will they take it seriously?

Yes put it down especially if those are skills for the new job.

Where can I volunteer for IT work online?

It’s hard to get a job without experience, and it’s hard to get experience without a job. I thought I might get some experience working as a volunteer while I can afford to. Anything you’d recommend?

Try the web sites below. Often, you will still have to go onsite to organizations to introduce yourself, talk about your credentials and the scope of projects you want to do, and build trust at an organization so they will be comfortable with your working from home.
