Ritsumeikan Volunteer Center (pt. 2)

Posted on April 20th, 2010 by admin in volunteer center of | No Comments »

Part two of a video made for the volunteer center at Ritsumeikan University (Kinugasa Campus) in Kyoto.

Unfortunately those goons at Warner Music have turned off the audio, so the whole video is pretty much ruined. Feel free to heap your scorn on those corporate swine-headed ingrate mongoloids as much as I have.

Anyway, it was made by a collection of international and Japanese students as part of their JWP Service Learning class in hopes of raising awareness of the volunteer center and encouraging exchange students to include volunteering as part of their experience in Kyoto. Sorry for the small text in the video, but then again you didn’t go on Youtube to read, did you?

So, now that you’re inspired by our crudely made video, go forth and volunteer!

I volunteer at the daycare center at my church. How can I get my assistant to stop putting toddlers in danger?

Posted on April 13th, 2010 by admin in volunteer center of | 8 Comments »

My assistant and I look after 4 toddlers every evening. They are 13 months, 15 months, 19 months, and one is 2 years old.

I’m just going to come out and say it, my assistant is an IDIOT. She doesn’t know I thing about toddlers and does potentially dangerous activities with them that aren’t age appropriate. She’s a know-it-all and refuses to listen to me when I tell her she’s making a mistake or doing something that could cause harm.

She even takes them outside to play in the parking lot and they run around all over the place and skin their knees. Yesterday, one of the little girls was almost ran over by a vehicle when she was chasing after a softball.

By the time they come back inside from playing, they are usually covered in mud, sweaty, and have scrapes and cuts all over their little legs were they have fallen on the pavement.

They do GREAT when they are in the nursery playing with toys, but my stupid assistant wants to take them outside all of the time.

OH, I forgot to tell you about the time she gave one of them hard candy. Fortunately, I knew how to perform the heimlich maneuver or else he may have died that day.

How can I get through to my assistant that she doesn’t know what she’s doing?

I’m 17, my assistant is 23.
I used to be the only person their who would volunteer. One day she offered to help so I thought "Hey, why not".

Little did I know how bad she was going to be at it.

Talk to the toddlers parents and see if they can explain it to her. Sometimes if it comes from a parent it will cause her to change.

I miss my grandpa who passed away a few years ago— should I volunteer at a senior center?

Posted on April 11th, 2010 by admin in volunteer center of | 18 Comments »

I miss my grandpa so much and miss his stories that he used to tell me about his life growing up. Stories about a mean chicken that lived on his farm, how his family was poor and he had to walk to school in the snow with holey shoes, and his first girlfriend, Pearl. What I would give to hear those stories one more time!

I know that nobody could ever take the place of my grandpa but would volunteering at a senior center or "old folks home" be beneficial? There are so many questions that I wish I could ask my grandpa about the "olden days" and I love those stories that older people tell about how life was in the 20’s and 30’s.

Do elderly people welcome younger people as visitors—could I adopt a grandpal? btw–I’m in my mid 20’s.

Honey, you’re exactly what the doctor ordered!

There’s no group more in need or deserving of attention than elderly people in our nursing homes.

They are dressed, put in their wheelchair in the lobby or hall until lunch arrives. They’re grateful for the tiniest bit of conversation because some have no visitors. After lunch
a little recreation is offered then back to the hall until dinner. It’s a boring, long day.
Many have all their faculties and could converse with you about the past until the cows come home! At the end of the first visit you’d be everybody’s favorite grandaughter.

Go get ‘em, girl

Blessings Juju

Can teens volunteer at the Child Development Center in Fort Riley Kansas?

Posted on April 9th, 2010 by admin in volunteer center of | 1 Comment »

I’m 15 and my 4 year old sister has been going to this daycare for a while now and I love to see the kids and play with them.I mean these kids even remember my name and everytime I walk in I hear "ALLIE!!" from somehwere in the room. I was wondering if teens my age could just volunteer there as a summer or part time job.

Sometimes the minimum age of volunteering is the same as the minimum age to be allowed to work. Ask the staff there next time you’re in if they need any volunteers and if you need to be a minimum age to volunteer there. I’m sure they’d appreciate you offering to volunteer at the very least and if turns out you’re too young they may ask you to come back when your a little older. Volunteering always looks great on applications when you apply for colleges and work later on in life. It’s also a very satisfying and rewarding experience and a great learning opportunity. Go for it.

What type of volunteer work should I do?

Posted on April 7th, 2010 by admin in volunteer center of | 7 Comments »

I already volunteer at my local humane center I’m a "cat cuttler" and a "mut strutter"! Where else should I volunteer I want it to be satisfying, but I want it to look good for a medical school and college applications in general.

Helping out in general always looks good on an application. Go to www.volunteermatch.com and register. You can decide what kinds of things you will or won’t do; groups in need of volunteers, either long or short term, will contact you via e-mail. Other suggestions, volulnteer work that is more difficult is going to be looked with more respect: homeless shelters, soup kitchens, hospice care. These aren’t always "fun" but they are absolutely fulfilling. Most hospitals need regular volunteers for numerous jobs around the place, everything from helping patient’s families find their way around, to delivering flowers to rooms. If you go to church, you can start there; all churches have volunteer opportunities, both within the church and in the community. If you aren’t much of a church-goer, try a Unitarian Universalist church; they’re very liberal (so if you’re ultra religious it might not be for you), but they always have alot of volunteer duties in the community.
