US Pro Cycling Press Conference

Posted on June 14th, 2010 by admin in volunteers of america education center | No Comments »

The Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Championships will return to Greenville for the fifth consecutive year during the weekend of September 18 – 19. George Hincapie, three-time U.S. Professional Road Race National Champion and Greenville resident, announced that he will be back to defend his 2009 title at a news conference held today in downtown Greenville. Hincapie was joined by event organizers and representatives from the event’s many partners, including Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS), which marks its fifth year in partnership and fourth year as the event’s title sponsor; Duke Energy, which returns for a second year as the Presenting Sponsor of the Individual Time Trial Championships; GE Energy, which returns for a fifth year in partnership and Presenting Sponsor of the Post Summary Show on WYFF-4; the City of Greenville; Greenville County; Medalist Sports and the Palmetto Peloton Project.

The Individual Time Trial Championships will be held on Saturday, September 18 at CU-ICAR, where cyclists will compete against the clock on a 6.9 mile course (completed 3three times). The Road Race Championships will be held on Sunday, September 19, with the start/finish in downtown Greenville. The 112-mile course will include four passes over Paris Mountain.
In addition to the dual championships, the Roger C. Peace U.S. Handcycling National Criterium Championship is once again scheduled. This is the season finale event for the U.S. Handcycling Series, presented by the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and will return for the second year in a row with a time trial on Saturday and the National Handcycling Criterium Championships on Sunday. The Stars and Stripes Challenge, a recreational and fundraising cycling event to support local cancer research, will also take place on Sunday.

According to Chris Aronhalt, Managing Partner of Medalist Sports, the USA Cycling Professional Championships have continued to gain popularity with each passing year, and last year, drew nearly 75,000 spectators over the course of the event weekend. Aronhalt attributes the Championships’ popularity to several factors: level of competition and terrain, community and sponsor support and the variety of events and activities that take place over the course of the weekend. “There is no question that this event offers fans an opportunity to see the nation’s best professional cyclists compete and that Greenville provides an ideal setting to host the Championships,” said Aronhalt. “In addition to that, however, I think the fact that fans are not kept at arm’s length, but rather can be actively engaged in the event, is a significant aspect of its appeal.”

The Stars and Stripes Challenge is one way that fans can literally be a part of the action. Presented by the Palmetto Peloton Project, which promotes the advancement of cancer research through fundraising fitness events, the Stars and Stripes Challenge not only allows participants to ride the same road course as the pro cyclists, but also raises money to support local cancer programs and research at Greenville Hospital System as well as the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Approximately 800 riders from across the United states participated in last year’s Stars and Stripes Challenge, and to date, the event has raised more than $400,000 for cancer research.

According to Michael Riordan, GHS President and CEO, providing the region’s most comprehensive and innovative medical treatment is only part of the hospital system’s mission. GHS is also committed to prevention, education and research and strives to help the community to be healthy, making them a perfect partner for the USA Cycling Professional Championships.

“GHS is pleased to serve as title sponsor of the USA Cycling Professional Championships for a fifth year and to be a recipient of the Palmetto Peloton Project (P3),” said Riordan. “We are grateful for P3’s gift to cancer research because it not only impacts the people in our community but people across the county and around the world. In addition, P3 events, such as the Stars and Stripes bicycle ride, offer our community an opportunity to get out and be active, which reinforces our commitment to total health.”

With the championships only a few months away, the excitement is already building and organizers expect this year’s event to be the largest ever. Route maps and race details can be found on the event website, which also offers online registration for volunteers. Fans are encouraged to visit http://www.usacyclingchampionships.com/default.aspx to stay up-to-date on race news and events and can also follow the event on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/usacyclingchampionships and Twitter at http://twitter.com/USAProCycling.

A Beacon of Hope – The Mother’s Day Song

Posted on May 19th, 2010 by admin in volunteers of america education center | 6 Comments »

“Life begins at conception. God, and not man (or woman), is the Creator of human life. Therefore, from conception to natural death we need to protect and respect the sanctity of every human life. For the past four decades in America, the child in the womb has often been referred to as ‘a mere piece of tissue’. Moreover this little person has been thought of as a blank slate – without emotion, memory or the ability to communicate. Yet, studies and the use of today’s technology (in the same period) has revealed the unborn develops physically and mentally at an incredible rate, and is capable of remarkable feats”.**

Since 1973, more than 39,000,000 babies have lost their chance for a contribution to this beautiful country of America. That is more than 30 times the number of brave men and women who have lost their lives fighting for our freedom since the Revolutionary War in 1775. Every precious life that is saved would contribute an estimated amount of $270,000 through college graduation to to our financial economy. If 25% of those children lost to abortion each year were granted life, that equals $108,000,000,000 spent in food, housing, clothing, education and child-related products. Why does our government not talk about the tremendous job stimulus created by this financial impact? This unique song presents the hopes and dreams of an unborn baby singing to the Mother to save its live. The lyrics highlight the pressure from others concerning a pregnancy, which is typically unplanned and generally to young, out-of-wedlock future parents. However, the baby asks for this “one chance to laugh, to play and dance”. A Mother who makes the right choice to save her child’s life can seek help from charitable ministries for guidance and financial support. This song is dedicated to my lovely wife, Lynn, who gives generously of her time to A Beacon of Hope located in Johns Creek, Georgia. Please visit www.abeaconofhope.com for more information about this ministry. The center enrolls the expectant women into their church sponsored programs and supports the Mother and baby through the first two years of life. Our goal is to inspire these young women to make the spiritual choice of life. Please search for a similar organization in your community to support with your time, talents and financial gifts for this critically important cause. As the producer of this video and the songwriter of the lyrics, I would to express special thanks to the following people: Richard Kearney – music producer and song collaboration (great creative partner!) www.after3pmmusic.com. A Beacon of Hope staff and volunteers for their tireless dedication and inspiration. Amanda Smay & Teresa Saker – winners of the “Inspire Life” art contest featured in the video.
