Are you looking for a way to rack up service hours without leaving the comfort of your home? I think that defeats the purpose, don’t you? Why don’t you focus on areas that match your interest in things outside your home.

For instance, if you like animals, volunteer to walk dogs at the animal shelter – just about every county has at least one. If you like books, volunteer to shelve books at the library. If you like children, your church nursery probably could use an extra pair of hands, and the local elementary school might welcome someone to come in and read stories to Kindergarten or first grade.

Maybe you just like nature – ask the local environmental groups when they’re having a "Clean Up Day" at the local park, shore, or wildlife area. Do you play guitar or any instrument? Call a nursing home and ask them when would be a good time for you to come up and play for the elderly residents who don’t get to see many young people & will be so happy to have you play for them!

What I’m saying is, there are many ways to serve the community. You won’t know what a joy giving can be until you have gone out and participated. You will never be the same. It is so worth it.

Best to you.

Or even if you haven’t can you tell me what kind of stuff they have you do when you volunteer at a rehabilitation center for drugs or alcohol?
Well i managed to look up information and they do have people who volunteer if you are qualified. You have to apply like you would for a regular job. They do things like teaching arts and crafts classes. There was a list but I’d have to dig it out. Thanks for your help though it is much appreciated.

I seriously doubt any treatment centers would accept volunteers off the street, there would be huge liability and confidentiality issues. If there were such positions, they’d use graduates of the program.

I just answered a question about working in a rehab:

Over 90% of rehab centers in the US are 12step based, AA/NA. Most of the rest are Narconon, a Scientology based program, or heavily religious. Courts, government agencies, and employee assistance programs mandate 12step rehabs.

Almost everyone who works at a 12step rehab have had their own problems with alcohol and/or drugs and are AA/NA members. I’m sure you don’t want to go out and become an alcoholic or addict to qualify. The pay isn’t very good, and there is a huge turnover due to relapses, but many of the people who work in rehabs have a spotty employment record and some sort of arrest record so it’s the best they can do.

What you can do is take some courses in Human Services and first of all, see if that’s what you really want to do.

In the past twenty years or so, the courts governing 16 states have ruled that AA is "religious in nature" and mandated 12step treatment to be a violation of the Establishment Clause. Hopefully, more to soon follow. What this means for you, is that there are more treatment opportunities that are not 12step based over the coming years.

I’m a mental health care worker, I work for an ACT program (Assertive Community Treatment), primarily with those who have coexisting substance abuse problems. We use Motivational Interviewing with our clients. About half of all people with mental health disorders have substance abuse problems and about half the people with substance abuse issues have a mental illness. Integrated Treatment, treating both problems, is a growing field. It has been found to be counterproductive to use two different treatment methods, especially when they are often at odds with each other.

Feel free to email me.

The US Army had won the Spanish-American war in large measure due to the volunteers who answered the call to “Remember the Maine”. The Regular Army was expanded and on 2 February, 1901, Congress added five cavalry regiments. The 11th Cavalry was formed and designated to live in history as “The Blackhorse”.

This film clip is from the Herman Croninger collection at the Military History Institute, part of the Army Heritage and Education Center, located in Carlisle, PA.

This film was transferred to vhs tape, and then reformatted to a digital copy. While the original film has not survived, the images take us back to a time when Army transportation required both the care, and feeding of horses.

OM…One Million Faces is hanging in the Lincoln gallery at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. (2130 Arapahoe Avenue, Boulder, CO 80302, (303) 444-0202, www.naropa.edu) through March 19th, 2010.

The OM show features numerous original works mixed media collages created by Peggy and members of the community from the photographs Peggy has taken during the past 8 months.

Peggy Dyer is traveling the country, dotting the map for her causes seeking out community events and local hot spots to host her photo-booth style shoots. Charitable contributions will be collected on-site and additional donations can be made through the official website “http://www.onemillionfaces.org” Each face captured in a photo is a memory of how One Million Faces can impact our world.

While the portrait of America unfolds, potentially millions of dollars can be raised for charities nationwide. Currently, The One Million Faces project donates their time and funds to the following charities: Davis Phinney Foundation, The Chanda Plan, Team 25 – The Shjon Podein Children`s Foundation, MESA (Moving To End Sexual Assault) Program, and Rett Syndrome Research Trust.

This modern art project began with an idea on February 26th, 2009. The first photo shoot event manifested on February 28th, 2009 and Peggys friend Angie was the first of one million faces. Peggy has been tip-toeing around the nation and could come to a city near you soon. She has been in Florida, Alabama, Missouri, North Carolina, Washington, and Wisconsin just to name a few. In case you are wondering who will be the #1,000,000 face, Peggy hopes it can be President Barack Obama.

To date, Peggy has photographed 1,334 faces towards her goal for The One Million Faces Project.

What number will you be?

Davis Phinney Foundation http://www.davisphinneyfoundation.org

The Davis Phinney Foundation has a single mission. It is to improve the lives of people living with Parkinson’s disease. We fund innovative research that will make lives better today while working to prevent and cure this crippling disease tomorrow.

The Chanda Plan http://www.thechandaplanfoundation.org/

The Chanda Plan’s mission is to improve the quality of life for people with physical disabilities through grants and education to access complementary and alternative therapies.

Team 25 – The Shjon Podein Children`s Foundation http://www.team25.com/

The mission of Shjon Podein’s Children’s Foundation is to improve the quality of life and create an environment of caring and community support for children facing extraordinary difficulties in their lives. The children, their families, our board and volunteers, sponsors and celebrities all work together in our efforts to accomplish this mission. TOGETHER we are Team25.

MESA – Moving to End Sexual Assault http://www.movingtoendsexualassault.org/

The mission Moving to End Sexual Assault (MESA) is to end the suffering in our community caused by sexual assault. We believe every person has the right to live free of sexual assault. Through our client services we are here to help sexual assault survivors and their loved ones today and through our prevention education programs we are working towards changing tomorrow to ensure a world free of sexual assault.

Since 1972, MESA has and continues to be the only rape crisis center serving Boulder County. MESA serves over 1,000 individuals annually through our Rape Crisis & Information Hotline.

Rett Syndrome Research Trust http://www.rsrt.org/

The goal of the Rett Syndrome Research Trust is to deliver clinical trials of a novel treatment strategy within five years.

Every five hours a girl is born with Rett Syndrome! Rett Syndrome (RS) is a neurological disorder that primarily affects your girls and women. For the first year or so, the girls with RS seem perfectly normal, but then they can lose the ability to walk, talk and use their hands properly. As the girls grow older, they often develop seizures, breathing disorders, scoliosis, and other difficulties. There currently is no known cure or treatment, but there is hope. On February 8th 2007, a breakthrough discovery was announced. Scientists have reversed the symptoms of RS in mice, giving us all hope that this can also be done for girls suffering from RS.
