There are a lot of online volunteering opportunities in the net. I myself volunteer 2 hours per week to Kiva.org doing translation from local language to english in a micro lending site – online. I receive the material via e-mail and post the result to the website. Simple.

I heard of mentoring programs that are run online via email, etc.. but I don’t have a resource for ya sorry… I’ve been interested myself, post back if you find something! (maybe google "online mentoring" etc…) you can also call around to your local big brother/ sister org, and other agencies for advice…

Good for you, Kate. I know it may sound a little strange, but that is more or less what I am doing here. Although my husband calls it my new hobby, I kind of like to think of coming onto Yahoo answers as a kind of community service of sorts. I hang out mostly in the areas that interest me: community service, health, psychology, ect. Never made it past a B.A. degree in psych. but I loved it dearly, and feel like there are all kinds of people online here asking for help or advice and for whatever reason don’t go to a professional for it, so I like to try to help whenever I feel competent in an area where someone needs help. I did check out a pen pals.com search on google before I posted here (because some other answerer had suggested that to a similar question) but it only gave me those "meet sexy singles!" sites, and I am pretty sure that is not what you had in mind. I also frequently refer people to network for good:

You may be able to find something that matches up with your interests on there. Best of luck to you my friend. Wishing you peace and blessings.

There are LOTS on my website.
I have a website based on a range of different subjects like Animal Cruelty, the Homeless, Child Abuse, and Cancer Awareness. On each topic page, I list many specific links that you can visit to see how you can help in certain situations whether it’s volunteering, participating in programs, or even donating. For more information, please visit my website.
