Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center Volunteer
Darin Steffl enjoyed volunteering in the Blood Donor Center during his senior year of high school. Donating whole blood takes between 45 to 60 minutes, and donating plasma can take up to two hours. As a volunteer in the Blood Donor Center, Darin was stationed in the waiting area and had numerous responsibilities. He offered refreshments to blood donors, provided magazines and newspapers, set up videotapes for children whose parents were donating blood, helped donors get settled with laptops or other equipment, or sat and talked with donors after they gave blood. Darin knew how important each donor was to Mayo Clinic and the community, and through his volunteer efforts they made sure that the people who came to donate blood had the best experience possible.

In the USA most …
In the USA most blood donor ctrs are supported by volunteers. They do NOT pay for blood. This is true for Mayo Clinic also. FDA says that blood used for transfusions cant be “bought.” Studies show volunteers provide a safer blood supply. There is no substitute for human blood and one has to depend on donors. A blood donation is a gift of life a healthy person can give. A unit of blood can be separated into components that save multiple lives. M.J. Gandhi, MD, Dir., Blood Donor Ctr, Mayo Clinic

Why would anyone …
Why would anyone DONATE blood? How about the big multi billion dollar corporations such as the Mayo Clinic PAYING people for their blood? What is so special about blood that it has to be “donated”. I guarantee you that Mayo wont donate much to the public.
