I have volunteered at homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and Salvation Army in the past during the holidays.
There is not much to "registering" and these have been some of the best experiences volunteering I have had.

Micheala gives a nice answer.
Let me give a different one. On Thanksgiving and during the Christmas holiday season many run to volunteer. The kind of help needed at shelters and in meals on wheels programs is every day. Please considering enjoying yourself and building up good family ties on T-day. Make up a card of a promise to yourself to volunteer once a month — on days when folks to help are hard to find.
