Firstly - Good Luck with your work, anything that helps improve the chances of our planet having a future gets my vote.

Apart from the suggestions made by other contributers, the only thing I can think of is that you conact all the major organisations that have similar aims to yourselves and ask if they would consider giving you a mention on their website.

Some of the larger charities also publish magazines (issues released about 4 times per annum), and you could enquire about the cost of having leaflets inserted in their publications.

I wish you the best of luck. Don't let the critics get you down!
References :
1. Register with your local Volunteer Centre.
2. Register on www.do-it.org.uk
3. Register on www.reach.org.uk
4. If you have a University nearby contact their volunteering officer (or equivalent - they normally have someone who deos this role)
I am concerned that you are having to ask questions like this on here. Are you not being advised by your local CVS?
References :
Voluntary secotr consultant

I think probably listing online is the easiest, most cost-effective way of getting the word out to a large number of people. In the UK here are some sites to post your volunteer opportunities:

http://www.volunteering.org.uk/
http://www.do-it.org.uk/

Also, you can post on Craigslist, which is absolutely free! Their site is at:

http://www.craigslist.org

All the best in your very important work!
References :
If your charity is about global warming and the carbon footprint then I think you should do more research and re-evaluate who you are really helping through this type of charity!

i.e The government.

It's best to help people who are dying now than to attempt to prevent death hundreds of years down the line.

As for how to attract volunteers, try finding people who are interested in your cause. Print up some info and stop people in the streets on a Saturday.
References :
Food in specific. Barbecues work miracles. Volunteers can bring their own food.

An "after the job is finished" party works. Make the volunteers feel worthwhile and allow time to enjoy each others company.

Have entertaining and amusing breaks during the project. Be fun to be around.

Because if it is all business and no pay, that simply does not compute.
